A nice bright morning and a full English breakfast with a wonderful view of Wolf Rock lighthouse and the Atlantic Ocean - time to start this bike ride thingy.
I got the bike out of our car, reassembled it and checked everything was ok, then we went for the obligatory start photos
Now I had itchy feet and was raring to get started, so we headed to the start line and I was off.
Half a mile down the road i had to stop - my Garmin wasn't working! It seemed to think it was still in Crawley and just said that it was 'acquiring satellites'. Hmmm, good job I've got my printed maps and am not relying on the technology! Unfortunately I haven't got a repairing hammer available, so the Garmin will now be relegated to the corner of a bag somewhere in the boot of the car. Hoorah! for OS Maps, yah boo sucks to modern technology (once again proving it aint that good).
I started riding again and really enjoyed it - especially the flat route around Mount Bay with wonderful views of St Michaels Mount.
After that it was climb after climb as I ascended the spine of Cornwall along some lovely quiet lanes.
Jan and I struggled to rendezvous and find somewhere for lunch in the Redruth area and ultimately made do with sandwiches in a layby on the side of the route. The quiet A-road I planned into my route turned out to be really busy (due to the weekend closure of the A-30) so I rushed along it as quick as I could and with my bright rear lights flashing to keep the road traffic on their toes. After about 7 miles of that it was back onto quiet (and hilly) lanes where I went past the Lappa Valley Railway just as a train arrived.
Finally I reached my destination, the village of St Columb Major - and Jan was waiting there to take us a few miles west to our B&B in Newquay.
So, todays Stats are:
Todays miles: 51.89 Miles
Maximum Speed: 39.44 mph
Climbing: 3,758 feet
Accumulated Distance: 51.89 Miles
